What Does It Mean to Be Blessed by God?

We’ve all heard someone say, “I’ve been blessed by God,” usually in relation to success, health, family, wealth, or a job. We’ve even heard athletes say this after winning a big game. We all want to be under God’s blessing.

The common understanding of what it means to be blessed by God is that He gives us good things. In this respect, we can say that God’s blessing is on everyone, believers and unbelievers alike. Matthew 5:45 says that the Father who is in the heavens causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and unjust.

But does God’s blessing pertain only to material things? Though these are included, thinking of God’s blessing as mainly material things severely limits our understanding of what is in God’s heart for us as believers. So what is the fuller meaning of being blessed by God?

The blessing of Abraham

Let’s begin with the blessing of Abraham by God in Genesis 12:3: “And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.” We might think being blessed here means something outward, like having a good life. But in Galatians 3:13 and 14, the apostle Paul specifically explained what blessed in Genesis 12:3 means:

“Christ has redeemed us out of the curse of the law, having become a curse on our behalf; because it is written, ‘Cursed is every one hanging on a tree’; in order that the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.”

These verses explain both how we can be blessed and what the blessing of God is.

How can we be blessed?

As fallen sinners, we deserve nothing but judgment and curse, certainly not blessing. And our good works or behavior can never make us “blessable.” But Jesus became a curse on our behalf. On the cross, He bore the curse that was upon all humanity and died in our place. Because of the redemptive work of Christ on the cross for us, we cursed sinners can now receive the blessing of God through faith in Christ.

What is the blessing of God?

Galatians 3:14 makes clear that the blessing in Christ Jesus that God wants us to receive isn’t material things, but something far greater—the promise of the Spirit.

Note 2 on this verse in the New Testament Recovery Version helps us understand what this blessing is:

“In the gospel we have received not only the blessing of forgiveness, washing, and cleansing; even more, we have received the greatest blessing, which is the Triune God—the Father, Son, and Spirit—as the processed, all-inclusive life-giving Spirit dwelling in us in a most subjective way for our enjoyment. Oh, what a blessing that we can enjoy such an all-inclusive One as our daily portion!”

But in this verse what, or who, is “the Spirit” that we receive? The next note on verse 14 says this:

“This verse indicates that the Spirit is the blessing that God promised to Abraham for all the nations and that has been received by the believers through faith in Christ. The Spirit is the compound Spirit, as mentioned in note 52, and actually is God Himself processed in His Trinity through incarnation, crucifixion, resurrection, ascension, and descension that we may receive Him as our life and our everything. This is the focus of the gospel of God.

The physical aspect of the blessing that God promised to Abraham was the good land (Gen. 12:7; 13:15; 17:8; 26:3-4), which was a type of the all-inclusive Christ (see Col. 1:12 and note 2). Since Christ is eventually realized as the all-inclusive life-giving Spirit (1 Cor. 15:45; 2 Cor. 3:17), the blessing of the promised Spirit corresponds with the blessing of the land promised to Abraham. Actually, the Spirit as the realization of Christ in our experience is the good land as the source of God’s bountiful supply for us to enjoy.”

Experiencing God’s blessing

Christ dwells in us as the all-inclusive Spirit, so we can experience Him in a personal, subjective way by contacting Him with our spirit. We can pray, call on His name, and read His Word. By simply turning to Christ in our spirit, talking to Him throughout the day, we can enjoy Him as our rich portion.

Suppose you pray for a better job and get a higher paying position. Happily, you thank the Lord for it. But what happens when the new work environment presents some difficulties? If you realize that God didn’t just bless you with a new job but with much more, with the all-inclusive Christ who lives in you, you’ll contact the Lord as the life-giving Spirit dwelling in your spirit. So instead of asking the Lord to take away the problems or bless you with another job, you’ll open your heart to Him and asked Him to be your wisdom, strength, whatever you need, to face the troubles at work. You’ll begin to experience Christ as the bountiful supply in that difficult situation. You’ll enjoy Him—the top blessing.

Pursuing Christ, the real blessing

If we think God’s blessing is mainly of things in the material realm, we’ll pursue these things, spend our prayer time asking God for them, and when we don’t get them, wonder whether we’re blessed by God. Meanwhile, we’ll miss enjoying the broader, fuller, and more real blessing of God—Christ for our experience and enjoyment. By focusing on and pursuing Christ, we can enjoy the all-inclusive Spirit as the top blessing of God!

Surely we should be thankful for the material things the Lord gives us. But we’re truly blessed when we experience Christ as our love, our peace, our patience, our satisfaction, our joy, and so many other aspects of Himself.

We have this wonderful Person now within us, the greatest blessing in the universe!

“Lord, thank You for dying as a curse for me so I could be blessed with Yourself. Thank you for living in me as the Spirit. Open the eyes of my heart to see beyond the physical and material blessings You’ve given me. I desire to experience You as the highest blessing in the universe!”

We love hearing from you, so please share your thoughts and experiences related to the post (blog commenting guidelines).

    1. Amen we have the highest and best blessing – our Lord Jesus Christ -on this Thanksgiving Day !ACTS 11:17-18 ” If therefore God has given to them the equal gift as also to us who have believed on the Lord Jesus, who was I that could have forbidden God ? And when they heard this things, they became silent and glorified God, saying, Then to the Gentiles also God has given repentance unto life.”

    2. This was awesome, thank u very much for the insight. As i studied on, the Lord opened this up to me fully. i love him, thank you again

  1. What a wonderful fact and reality; that we have been blessed with the All inclusive, prosess and consumated Spirit, who is Christ himself as the reality of the blessing given to Abraham. Lord, thank you for such a blessing.

    1. Wow! I am so greatful, create in me a clean heart oh! Lord! and renew my spirit within me… Thank you for this wonderful blessing.

  2. Blessing = God’s Choicest Gift
(Ref: Hebrews 2:4 And God confirmed the message by giving signs and wonders and various miracles and gifts of the Holy Spirit whenever he chose)

  4. The Lord Jesus as The Holy Spirit is most definitely by far the most amazing gift and blessing we will ever receive. I had the privilege of sharing w/children this truth. I feel grieved that little children (maybe bigger ones as well) are all so saturated and excited about getting “stuff”, their favorite “toy” or in this day and age “device”. How to let them know that these “things” will never satisfy like God’s Gift of His Son given to fill us w/His Divine Life. I wrote songs singing of The Greatest Gift given by God (during the Christmas Holiday Season)to us and with this, all I can do is just enjoy that Divine Life in my singing and look to The Lord to impart into the children’s heart a spark of realization that they may be ignited by inwardly, that a love and appreciation for The Savior may be layed hold of.

  5. What an inspiration. Thank God for blessing us with his Holy Spirit. Today so many people are concerned about material things and forgetting the true blessings of Almighty God. I pray and hope that many would start thanking God for his love for us that he sent his only begotten son to die for us. Thank you Jesus.

  6. The Blessing Of The Lord Make It Rich and that is not only material but every arena of LIFE!!! I THANK GOD FOR HIS BLESSING!!! I really enjoyed this and every article.

  7. I really needed to read this. I have been trying to figure out why we were moved to a place where we would struggle harder. Where things would seemingly turn upside down and I spent my first 2 months here crying and angry. I ultimately became rebellious toward people who would say “you will be alright, I was…”. I felt as if no one understood. Often satin would whisper into my ear and try to get me to be angry at God. Sometime I would yell how I didn’t understand. Then one day I said something have to change. All I could think of was Job and I begin saying I have to except the good as well as the bad, but no matter what God is in charge. He will never leave me or forsake me. I begin to thank him for what I did have, especially him. We are still enduring this and even with this baby coming and not a stitch of clothing or necessities yet I am trusting God. Everything I have tried to do on my own failed and it shouldn’t have taken that for me to give it to God and trust him(but you know us humans). I may not be in comfortable position and everyone around me may have the very things I want and feel like I need but what I find is everyday he is teaching me. Showing me better ways to teach my children of him for example. I stopped feeling sorry for myself and begin to ask him to cover me with his wings. Now since this article I will also ask him to show me and give me wisdom. Thank you Lord for being our refuge!! You have never let us down. Help me to remember not to worry. You clothe the fields with beautiful flowers so I know you will clothe my children. Thank you so much, not only for material things but grabbing me when I almost fell because of the lack of material things. You helped me realize there are people worse off and gave me a heart to help them where I can and be grateful. Thank you for the wisdom you are giving me through this trial. I love you Amen!

    1. Thank you for sharing with us your experience and realizations! It’s so wonderful that we have a heavenly Father who knows all that we need (Matthew 6:32) and that it matters to Him concerning us (1 Peter 5:7). May He keep reminding us that we can trust Him and love Him, no matter what we’re going through.

    2. This was was so well put and said. I, too have found myself in these shoes and feeling the same way. I have gone through some things in the last 10-15 years to where I thought I wasn’t gonna make it. I was once a License Practical Nurse and I became addicted to prescription pain pills from having some major surgeries. I ended up losing my nursing license and landed myself in legal troubles trying to support my habit. I ended up in a deep depression and didn’t work for almost five years. I just felt like my world had ended. Nursing was my livelihood and helping the sick was all that I knew. I ended up on the pitty pot feeling sorry for myself. Finally, I woke up one day and said, “okay, this is it, I want my life back”. I’ve now been clean for 10 years, have not had a pain pill since September 7, 2004. I am in the process of getting my criminal background cleaned up, I’m one class away from being able to apply to the R.N. program. Once I humbled myself and got into the word, I saw things differently. I accepted life on life’s term. I gave everything to God. I had to realize that, “God didn’t bring me this far to leave me”, I also had to realize and come to my senses and know he would not leave me nor forsake me. The devil will make us think any and everything when we’re weak! I’ve been working this one job for five years . I don’t make the money that I once made, but I thank God for what I do make. One thing I do know, it’s gonna get better. I pray for faith, knowledge, mercy, strength and wisdom throughout the day on a daily basis. I owe it all to God.

  8. When i think of how materials things today have made us the slaves.
When i think that even the Chruch today base his teachings on the materials blessings.
I can only say : Thank you Lord for this ministry who opened our eyes on our real blessing through Abraham by Faith in Jesus-Christ.
Christ our Freedom, our promise Land.
The good part which will be never removed ( Luc 10 : 42 )

  9. Many say God Bless you but in turn they do not know the full meaning as explained in your article.

  10. Thanks so much for this word. I truly needed this article. Sometimes I know I get caught up on the material things that God blesses me with but this article just reminds me that knowing God is my true bless. Thank you God!!!

  11. I love this mehn,,,many people don’t know the how God’s blessing work. I hope we get to know His blessing and notice the benefits of it cus it is all that we ever seek.

  12. It bothers me when I hear people say they have been blessed because they have a nice home, a good job, enough money to be comfortable because they somehow think they are worthy of God’s favor and his blessing. If you have had a life full of trials and struggling, hearing someone say they have been blessed makes you feel like you’ve been cursed. Whenever I get another life blow, I thank God for it. I thank him in everything. To the people who think they’ve been blessed, please be aware of your audience and keep the fact that you feel you are special to God to yourselves.

    1. Lorie – I know what you mean. I have had significant trials through my life and here is what I am getting a deeper appreciation of. In studying the Book of Job, the real significance of the book is not that Job patiently endured his suffering to a full restoration in the end. Those things really pale in comparison to what Job obtained through not only his patient endurance but his abiding wrestling with God. What he got was a deeper relationship with God Job 42:5. The good things of this life often result in shallowness and laodiceanism. I honestly believe that what I have suffered has resulted in a deep relationship with God that I would call a blessing. It far surpasses the “good” things of this life and I think better prepares me for life in His Kingdom in its fullness. Seek Him first. Hope this encouragement helps.

    2. I know exactly what you mean. I’ve been ill for 5 years and off from work for 1 year and my friends are hooking onto a new notion that they are all blessed with big homes and holidays and “don’t worry you will be blessed soon”. I feel blessed already and I’m grateful for my illness as it’s brought me closer to God. I just get upset when they are smug in their success and keep on saying they are blessed. It’s just material things and although I’m sincerely happy for my friends regardless of my situation I can’t help but question people throwing around that they are blessed. What about the poor, suffering, dying people.

  13. Salvation, holly spirit, fruits of the spirit and spiritual gifts are better than any materials or monies……Glory Glory Thank you Lord

  14. This is the BEST article/teaching, by far – I have ever ready or heard – about What “Blessing” really means! Praised be God, who, through His Holy Spirit, opened your eyes to this eternal truth, which most people – in the church today – are still blind to…

  15. Well the millions of people on this earth that were very Extremely Blessed with a Good Wife and Family do have so very much to be thankful for since i would Consider their life very much Complete when many of us Good Men are still waiting for that Gift of life as well. Since the women of today that are Nothing at all like the Real Good Old Fashioned Women were back in the Past really made it much Easier for the men in those days finding love since today it is very Impossible unfortunately.

  16. Ive heard that those who suffer for christ will be repaid. What about those who suffer because of Gods will? or by whatever happens on the earth?
