Our Lord Jesus Christ, Who Is Theirs and Ours

1 Corinthians 1:2—“To the church of God which is in Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, the called saints, with all those who call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ in every place, who is theirs and ours.”

Note 9 on theirs and ours says: “Christ as the all-inclusive One belongs to all believers. He is our allotted portion given to us by God (Col. 1:12). The apostle added this special phrase at the end of this verse to stress the crucial fact that Christ is the unique center of all believers in whatever place or situation. In this Epistle the apostle’s intention was to solve the problems among the saints in Corinth. For all the problems, especially the matter of division, the only solution is the all-inclusive Christ. We have all been called into the fellowship of, the participation in, Him (v. 9). All believers should be focused on Him, not being distracted by any gifted person, any overstressed doctrine, or any particular practice.”

Cross-reference “f” on theirs and ours directs us to these verses:

Colossians 1:12: “Giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you for a share of the allotted portion of the saints in the light.”

Song of Songs 6:3: “I am my beloved’s, and my beloved is mine; He pastures his flock among the lilies.”

Galatians 3:28: “There cannot be Jew nor Greek, there cannot be slave nor free man, there cannot be male and female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”

  1. This is such sweet and valuable truth. We are one with all those who call The Lord Jesus their Lord and Savior. To know Jesus is to Love Him. To Know the Body of Christ is to Love the Body of Christ because we share the same Eternal Life. Though we many believers may not have a fully transformed mind and may find ourselves doctrinally disagreeing, His Life in us is the treasure worth guarding and esteeming. Then doctrinal understanding and practices can’t divide us. It just means our understanding may vary. I love the prayer that “we would all arrive at the Oneness of The Faith”. Truly that oneness is produced by The Holy Spirit’s enlightening work in us. It’s wonderful that we can ignore any schisms and just practice “The Oneness” because we fully realize and appreciate the price paid for us to “own it” and practice it. ( that is “The Precious Blood of the Lamb of God who took away the sin of the world”…what a realm to live in! Very freeing from divisions!)

    1. May the Lord turn all of God’s children from everything to Christ. May He cause us all to focus on Him and save us from being distracted from Him!

  2. How wonderful that God has given His children Christ, no matter what their situation or background! Whatever problems we’re going through, whatever disagreements we’re having, every believer has Christ living in them, and He is our oneness. What a wise and wonderful God we have!

  3. I am so glad to be reminded that we need to focus on Christ and turn to Him. I appreciate that if all the believers focus on Christ, all the problems will be solved. Praise God!

    1. I’m not sure that they’re solved. They just take their rightful place in view of His Marvelous Presence and division drops away.
