What Does the Blood and Water That Came out of Jesus’ Pierced Side Mean?

John 19:32-34 includes details about Jesus’ crucifixion not recorded in the other three Gospels:

“The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man and of the other man who had been crucified with Him. But coming to Jesus, when they saw that He had already died, they did not break His legs; but one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately there came out blood and water.”

Hours after the Lord Jesus was crucified, the soldiers broke the legs of the two criminals who were crucified with Him. The Romans routinely broke the legs of crucified prisoners to hasten their deaths, but since Jesus had already died, they left His legs unbroken. One of them, though, pierced His side with a spear, and out came blood and water.

Basic Elements of the Christian Life

The Christian life is a journey. We begin this journey at salvation, our new birth in Christ, and we continue on through many different stages and experiences. On the one hand, every believer has a unique and precious journey with the Lord. On the other, the Christian life consists of many foundational matters that help all of us to progress in this journey.

The book, Basic Elements of the Christian Life, vol. 1, outlines some of these key matters of the Christian life. The five chapters in this book are meant to give every believer, whether newly saved or advanced in the Lord, a refreshing look at and even a broadened appreciation for some of the most basic elements of the life that we are living.

We hope you enjoy this book and receive, as many have, the invaluable help it provides. As a companion to your reading of the book, we have two short blog posts to accompany each of the five chapters and help you get more out of your reading. The first post for each chapter introduces its subject and poses questions for you to consider before and as you read. The second post emphasizes key takeaway points from the chapter and asks questions for your response.

Bibles for America Hits the Road to Give Away Bibles in California

Besides making it easy for people to order our free Christian books and Bibles through the Internet, we also like to get out and visit people in person. This past September, we took a one-week road trip to visit cities in the Bay Area and Central California. Along the way, we gave away 280 Bibles and Christian books in five cities: San Luis Obispo, Salinas, Berkeley, Merced, and Fresno.

Nancy and Stacey, two BfA staff members, got to meet many people from different backgrounds and age groups on the trip, talking with them about God, the Bible, and the Christian life. They describe some of their experience below.

Free Study Bibles for Boston

Sadly, we’ve seen how traumatic events leave fear, anxiety, and heartbreak in their devastating wake. And even as the work of recovery begins, the previously comfortable sense of security is replaced by a lingering disquiet.

The bombing and subsequent events this April affected the people of Boston as a whole. Though they were shaken, their rising up to stand together in this crisis has been inspiring to the nation.

Yet as the city works toward recovery and survivors continue to heal physically, the inner wounds inflicted on the hearts and souls of the victims, their families and friends, and the residents of the area will take a long time to heal.

Praying for Those Affected by the Bombing at the Boston Marathon

We, like the rest of the nation, are shocked and appalled by the news of the bombing at the Boston Marathon on Monday. We are praying for the entire city of Boston, and especially for the friends and families of the victims.

When a tragic event such as this occurs, feelings of sadness, anxiety, fear, and despair may overtake us. But we must remember that the acts of evil persons do not negate the fact that God is real. While we are grieving, God also grieves, and He wants to comfort those who suffer. He wants to be our rock, our hope, our father, even our home. We pray that in the midst of this violence, many would find Him as the One they need.

Announcing the New Bibles for America Blog

Welcome to the new Bibles for America Blog!

Each one of us here at BfA has been touched personally by the truths in the Bible and books we give away every day. And they continue to help us in our Christian life. That’s why we want to share the help we’ve received with all of America.

Since 2000 we’ve been giving away free copies of the New Testament Recovery Version and Christian books by Watchman Nee and Witness Lee. And we love doing it! Along the way, we’ve met a lot of people and heard from recipients of our free material.

A number have asked us questions about things they’ve been struggling with in their Christian life. They’ve also told us how much they want help to understand the Bible and to know God in a deeper way. Maybe this has also been on your mind.

That’s why we’re starting this blog.

Bible Study: Regeneration

This Bible study uses verses and footnotes from the New Testament Recovery Version. You can find more study topics here.

The word regeneration means “new birth.” Thus, to be regenerated is to be born again, to experience a new birth.

But what is this new birth? Is it merely a religious conversion? Is it to have a change in life through self-improvement, or to experience a new beginning by “turning over a new leaf”?

The New Testament has much to say about the new birth. It shows us clearly what it means to be regenerated, how we can be regenerated, and the result of being regenerated.

Share the Gospel of Jesus Christ

Sharing the gospel with others—friends, relatives, and people we meet during the course of our day—is part of a normal, healthy Christian life, and leads to much joy. But sometimes we have only a few moments to speak to someone; sometimes we’re not quite sure what to say.

For cases like these and many others, Bibles for America has developed a series of gospel tracts to help people spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. We’ve also made these tracts available as blog posts that are easily sharable. Each tract/post features a brief presentation of God’s eternal salvation and concludes with a prayer the reader can pray to receive the Lord Jesus as their Savior.
